Mike Clayton-Brown from Corlette set an early standard in the opening round of the under-16 boys, posting an impressive 16.1 two-wave heat total.
Clayton-Brown executed an array of decent turns to post the score and send a warning shot over the head of his competitors.
Jordy Turansky (Cronulla), Saxon Reber (Manly) and Zac McMartin (Woolooware,) all joined Clayton-Brown in the first round winner's circle and will make their next appearance in tomorrow’s semi-finals.
Charli Hurst (Port Kembla), Charlize Everitt (Boomerang Beach) and Matilda Taylor (Norah Head) all set a high standard in the opening round of the under-16 girls division claiming respective heat wins.
Fresh off a victory at the recent Rip Curl GromSearch in South Australia, Winter Vincent (Manly) came charging hard out of the gates in the under-14 boys division, posting an excellent 8.67 wave to gain the edge against his opposition.
Vincent nailed an eclectic mix of powerful snaps and carves to gain the upper hand in the heat and seal a spot into the semi-finals.
Not to be outdone, Baxter Hurt (Collaroy) put on a solid display of surfing in the tricky conditions to post a respectable 12.33 two-wave heat total in the 14 boys.
Hurt will meet Vincent, Dom Thomas (Swansea) and Zac Tinson (Merewether) in tomorrow’s semi-finals.
Rosie Smart (Sawtell) made her journey south worthwhile nailing a mammoth 16.26 two-wave heat total in the under-14 girls.
Smart seemed to be carrying the same momentum that saw her win the Woolworths Surfer Groms competition at Coffs Harbour, posting the previously mentioned score and left her fellow competitors needing two-wave combinations to take away her lead.
