The exit of racing car driver Craig Lowndes at the Newcastle Supercars contributed to Williamtown Airport breaking its highest-ever daily passenger record for the second consecutive year.

Friday, November 23, saw more than 5,270 passengers travel through the airport, with the vast majority of passengers arriving for the first day of the Newcastle 500 and Lowndes’ last ever race.
Contributing to the year-on-year increase was 26 additional flights provided by Virgin Australia and a new domestic direct route servicing Adelaide.
A total of 22,202 travellers passed through the airport over the five-day period, including the inaugural international flights servicing Auckland.
Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock said that the airport was thrilled to bring more travellers than ever through WIlliamtown to support major regional events.
