Don't dump your old fishing gear
A special request to all the pioneering families that I interviewed for my history books - please don't throw out all your old fishing and oyster gear in the dump!
We need your support if ever we are to start a museum.
Lobster in 1949
With all that in mind I thought you may be interested in this article excerpt, which appeared in the Newcastle Morning Herald August 24, 1949.
Fishermen at Port Stephens have so many lobsters they do not know what to do with them.
About 20,000 were received at the markets and sold for 1s 7d uncooked.
The Port Stephens men have thousands of dozens penned up in crates, but refuse to send them to market until they get a guaranteed price of 1s 10s pound (This is around 50 cents a lobster in today's currency)
Considering that lobstermen today may receive $80 a kilo I think that the old timers request was well deserved.
