A community consultation report released by Transport for NSW this week revealed that the majority of submissions received during the consultation period nominated the duplication of the existing alignment as the preferred option.
"There was support and opposition to each of the two route alignment options. Key issues raised included the loss of property and/or property functionality; financial loss; the reduction of construction traffic; a safer alignment and construction environment; and the potential for flooding and drainage," the report stated.
"These issues will be considered carefully during the preferred route alignment option decision-making process."
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack said that the 98 submissions received from residents, landowners and businesses would help shape the final route options for the project.
"Transport for NSW will now explore other route options and will go back out to the community with another Have Your Say in mid-2020."
The consultation report said that the project would be split into two sections of Nelson Bay Road: the first from Williamtown to Salt Ash (5km stretch), and a second from Salt Ash to Bobs Farm (4.6km).
"The key features include two lanes in each direction, improved intersection access, improved shoulders for cyclists and minimum 80km/h design."
Transport of NSW will keep the community informed as planning progresses.
