As part of the $500 million Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, designed to boost local government projects across Australia, Port Stephens Council successfully tendered for a share in the cash to make improvements to Longworth Park in Karuah, School Drive at Tomago, Shoal Bay foreshore and the Mallabula Sports Complex playground.
The popular Longworth Park has been allocated $150,000, which will be used to replace the amenities building.
"Karuah is a great village and the new toilets will be a great asset for both the local community and visitors," Dr David Gillespie, the Federal Member for Lyne (which takes in Karuah), said. "[Port Stephens] council will soon begin planning and design works for the space."
The new amenities building will continue the series of upgrades to Longworth Park, which have included upgrades to the playground, barbecue and picnic facilities.
Other projects that have been funded include: $300,000 for road rehabilitation works to School Drive; $180,000 for the Shoal Bay foreshore redevelopment (pathway, public amenities, park furniture, landscaping) and; $150,000 to replace the children's playground at Mallabula Sports Complex.
While the Tomago and Mallabula upgrades were not previously included on the council's planned projects works list, the Shoal Bay foreshore improvements have been in the pipeline since 2019.
As part of its $15.9m PS2020 plan to fast track projects across the LGA, the council had allocated $550,000 towards path and drainage works for Shoal Bay foreshore.
Before COVID-19, construction of the foreshore's shared pathway had been slated to begin April 2021.
