NELSON Bay Junior Rugby Union Club continues to find up and coming talent among its ranks with a string of players selected in Hunter Junior Rugby's 7s squads at the NSW State Championships in Tuncurry recently.

In under-15's Corey McDougall, Ethan Horwath, Jed Smith and Darcy Brown were selected, in under-17's it was Kai Vincent, Sam Mitchell and Connor Martel while in under-15 girls Ava Foster represented the club.
Corey McDougall and Sam Mitchell were selected in the NSW Gen Blue squads and will attend training camps at Waratah headquarters this weekend. Sam was identified as a player of interest by the national sevens selectors.
In further good news, players have been selected by the by the Hunter Wildfires under-10 side which recently took part in a trial with Central Coast and Illawarra districts. Elliot Quinn and Freddie Gravenor were impressive while in under-11s tough forward Joshua Perry was selected. Josh's elder brother Nathan had a great year with the Gropers first grade team.
The junior club held its end of season presentation recently, with standout players on all teams recognised. In the premiership winning under-15 side Darcy Brown was most consistent, Hayden Wilson most improved, Jed Smith players' player, Oscar Affleck and Ethan Howarth sharing best forward, Corey McDougall best back and Tyler Jarvis Gropers Spirit.
NELSON Bay Cricket Club's division one team playing at Don Waring Oval on the weekend produced a solid win over Premier Hotel.
Using the conditions to their advantage the Bay had the visitors all out for 74. The bowlers did a great job. Matt Palmer was the main destroyer, 3-18. Bryce Causley, 2-8, and teenage talent Luke Donovan, 2-19. The Makos started the run chase with Doug Rowland 25. With wickets tumbling, Ian Dixon posted a quickfire 21 to get the Bay home 9-75.
The under-15 Makos team won a tight contest over Hamilton-Wickham who were all out 39 on a dodgy wicket. Gun bowler Luke Donovan had a great day out and posted the impressive figures of 3-4 in the morning before two more wickets with the seniors in the afternoon. Other bowlers among the wickets were Rowan Connor, 2-1, Mitchell White, 2-4, and Riley Gibson, 2-10. Marcus McEvilly was best with the bat - 18 runs.
It is great to see the young players on turf wickets with leg spinner Mitchell White enjoying the conditions at Salamander Oval.
NELSON Bay Golf Club finalised its last championship of the year after several hiccups along the way. The club's mixed foursomes championships was played over 27 holes on Sunday. Robyn Kennett and Will Semmens made it back-to-back titles. Runners up were Lachlan Lawson and Barbara Frost with the net winners Stuart and Margot Phegan.
PORT Stephens Pythons Cricket Club had a good weekend in the Newcastle District Cricket Association competitions with the First XI and Second XI teams both having strong wins.
In First XI, the Pythons 8-193 were far too strong for the Wallsend Tigers 10/69.
At King Park, the seconds had Warners Bay down for 7-102 and replied with 5-103. i
In First XI Jarrod Moxey was best with the bat with a neat 74 runs followed by Craig Hunter, 36 n.o.
The bowling attack was lead by Lleyton Everleigh, 3-15, Matt Dean, 3-3, and Jeremy Kirkwood, 2-21.
In the seconds, best with the ball was Shannon Cox, 4-18, while Jeremy Rushford, 35, and Grant Garland, 26, were the pick of the batting line up.
It was a big defeat for the Pythons' Third XI side at Nesbitt Park against Kotara, which amassed 4/183 off 35 overs.
On Saturday, First XI face Redhead at King Park, Second XI against Redhead at Liles Oval and Third XI Warners Bay at King Park.
