Crackers up to and over 40cm are pouring along Stockton Beach swimming north to Fingal Beach before turning left and taking up residence along all the sandy beaches inside the port.
I call whiting the "family fish" as the entire family can catch these great fish any time of day off the beach. Beaches offer safe fishing with no snags, ideal for kids just learning the game.
For a relatively small fish whiting can put up a surprising battle before they are bounced up the sand.
With no spikes of concern the whiting is simple to scale, fillet and bone in readiness for the kitchen. Pat with flour before lowering into a bubbling mixture of oil and butter. A squeeze of lemon and you are in business. All the beaches hold whiting at this time of the year however the most popular are Stockton and Fingal.
Best bait is a savage sea worm or a yabbie that you have pumped inside the port. Pipis and peeled prawn will also work on occasions. The trick is to cast on the edge of the white water. Toss out and - hang on!
