The Salamander Bay and Raymond Terrace fire stations will be open from 10am to 2pm on May 14 for residents to meet their local firefighters and understand what they do in the community.
"From fires, road crashes, hazardous material incidents, natural disasters to urban search and rescue, our crews are prepared for anything and ready to help anytime," FRNSW commissioner Paul Baxter said.
"A large part of our role is to educate the community about home fire safety and that's where the open day comes in. This year we are focussing on the importance of having a working smoke alarm in your home."
Commissioner Baxter said there is a 10 per cent increase in the number of house fires during the cooler months, with many fires starting in bedrooms and lounge rooms due to heaters and electric blankets.
"This year we want to help residents prepare their homes and in particular, encourage them to check their smoke alarms and have a Home Fire Escape Plan," he said.
While grown-ups have the opportunity to learn more about home fire safety during the open day, children can see a fire truck, demonstrations and firefighting equipment.
Salamander Bay captain Malcolm Smith said firefighters were excited to have the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities and reconnect with the community, especially after CVOVID took those opportunities from them the past two years.
The open day at Salamander Bay (located at 194 Salamander Way) and Raymond Terrace (5 Leisure Way) will be a predominantly outdoor event with equipment and fire demonstrations.
The barbecue will also be running.
Raymond Terrace captain Giacomo Arnott said firefighters were "really excited" to be delivering an open day after having to cancel last year due to COVID.
"Be sure to come along, meet our crew, check out our truck and learn about fire safety and what we do," he said.
