As part of stage two approvals announced last week, the department was urged to work with Port Stephens Council on the upgrade of Medowie Road at Williamtown.
Newcastle MP Sharon Claydon, a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works, said that the committee had asked that the Department of Defence work with the council on the upgrade to achieve the best outcome for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
"This was a result of extensive community feedback," she said.
Ms Claydon said that the RAAF base project would see hundreds of millions of dollars invested in the Port economy.
"There will be immediate employment benefits for local builders and demolition experts plus ongoing employment opportunities in the region," she said.
The base redevelopment includes the provision of new office accommodation for 950 personnel to add to the 4000-plus workforce.
