Emergency services including five NSW Ambulance crews and two rescue helicopters were called to Williamtown on Wednesday afternoon on reports two vehicles – a red Kia Rio and white Holden Statesman sedan – had collided along Cabbage Tree Road, about 500 metres from the Nelson Bay Road roundabout.
It is understood that the occupants of one vehicle – the woman and a male passenger – and the male driver of the other vehicle collided head-on, causing the drivers of each vehicle to become trapped.
It is understood that the man was trapped in his vehicle for around 90 minutes.
The three people were freed from the vehicles and treated at the scene before all were taken to John Hunter Hospital.
The woman was flown by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the men transported by road in ambulances.
Cabbage Tree Road was closed for most of Wednesday afternoon. It re-opened between Masonite and Nelson Bay roads around 6.40pm.
Officers from Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The collision comes 10 days after a 68-year-old woman died on the same stretch of road.
Just after 5pm on January 6 emergency services were called to Tomago Road, which becomes Cabbage Tree Road as you drive from Tomago to Williamtown, after a sedan had left the road and hit a tree, trapping the occupants.
A 68-year old female passenger was freed from the vehicle. Despite attempts to resuscitate her, she died at the scene.
The 69-year-old male driver and two passengers were freed and taken to John Hunter Hospital, all in a serious condition.
The matter it still under investigation.
Hours before on the same day police attended another serious collision on Tomago Road.
