One is the steady drop in the population of squid that are caught recreationally from Birubi to Fingal.
Another is the drop off in the number and quality of tailor from Stockton north.
I mentioned my concern on ABC Radio over the weekend which resulted in a wave of supporting emails from listeners from Ulladulla to Ballina.
NSW Fisheries scientists from DPI have assured me that a joint research project with the Queensland Fisheries, concentrating on the drop in tailor numbers, has been conducted with the results to be released later this month. Should be interesting reading.
We all know how dangerous the Fingal Spit can be in certain conditions, with 15 lives reportedly lost over the years. I wonder if visitors to the area are fully aware.
Over the weekend I watched as a steady stream waded across onto the island including many family groups. It was very calm on low tide which may well give the explorers a false sense of security. This is an old problem at Fingal which has never been solved.
