The annual Australia Day police operation will launch at 12.01am on Friday, January 22 and wind up at 11.59pm on Tuesday, January 26.
"We've experienced a number of tragic fatalities [across NSW] already this year," Acting Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty, Traffic and Highway Patrol commander, said.
"Australia Day is about mateship, comradery, and looking out for each other. We want to see that on our roads."
Operation Australia Day 2021 will see officers patrolling roads across the state, targeting unsafe and dangerous driving.
"We're asking all drivers to drive to the conditions, concentrate on the road and be aware of your fatigue levels. Don't be tempted by distractions such as your mobile phone as this can all lead to tragic consequences and endanger lives," Assistant Commissioner Hegarty said.
Double demerits apply for speeding, seat belt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences during the long weekend police operation.
In addition to an increased police presence, traffic control and parking changes will be in force at the popular Birubi Headland.
Traffic control will be in place from 9am to 4pm from January 22 to January 26, Port Stephens Council said.
"Parking is not permitted on the eastern side of James Paterson Street between 6am and 6pm during the summer holiday period. Where possible, avoid crowded areas and stay COVID Safe this summer," the council stated.
