The association received $17,702 through the Local Sporting Grant last month, which was part of the NSW Government’s $48,305 cash splash to clubs in the area.
While happy with the funding injection, association president Helen Scott said it was a fraction of the $100,000 it needed to install competition-grade lighting at the Tomaree Sporting Complex courts.
“We have six netball courts, of which only four have floodlighting, so court time with adequate lighting is at a premium,” Scott said. “The floodlighting is only suitable for training, not for competition.
“The state government granted us $17,702 towards upgrading the existing lights and installing lighting on courts five and six. The cost to do this is extremely high, so we are seeking grants from other sources as well as sponsorship form other businesses.”
The association has until December 2017 to use the sporting grant, or it has to give it back.
Karuah Rugby League Football Club received $17,703 to make improvements at Lionel Morten Oval; Nelson Bay AFL Club ($7000) to upgrade the toilets and change rooms and; Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre ($5,900) to install permanent shade structures and fund transport to competitions.
