Weather does nothing to dampen 2017 Divison II Australian Mixed Ultimate Championship

The 2017 Division II Australian Mixed Ultimate Championship has been run and won in Nelson Bay.

About 440 players in 24 teams from around Australia took part in the tournament this year, which was held at Tomaree Sports Complex.

Despite a wet and windy first day on Friday, October 20, ultimate athletes hit the fields with smiles and positive attitudes.

The weather cleared up for the remaining two days of competition.

The final, gold medal game was played on Sunday, October 22 between Newcastle teams Apple and Rhubarb Pie and Pie Wagon Second Slice.

Pie Wagon, one of the two mixed teams from Newcastle Ultimate Frisbee Club, were expected to make the final.

After a well played final game, it was Apple and Rhubarb Pie who came out on top and won the tournament. McDuff A, from Sydney, took out bronze.

Tom Cruise Pact (Victoria) and Extinction (Queensland) were named Spirit of the Game winners.

Female MVPs were Clare Burman (Manly Flakkas) and Liz Drummond (Burley Griffins). Male MVPs were Dillon Taylor (Wyndham Surge) and Sebastian Brown (Monstars).

Hills Ultimate Frisbee Association, in partnership with Port Stephens Council, hosted the championship.

Janelle Gardner, the council's tourism and events coordinator, said the event drew more than 600 people to the area and injected more than $425,000 into the Port’s economy.
