Port Stephens MP Kate Washington and shadow minister for roads, Jodi McKay made the announcement on Tuesday morning, just 11 days out from the NSW election, committing to creating dual lanes for the final three stages: Medowie Road to Stockton, Williamtown to Bobs Farm and Anna Bay to Nelson Bay.
NSW Shadow Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Jodi McKay said, “Only a Labor Government will fund the full duplication of Nelson Bay Road.
“This is a big win for local residents throughout the Port Stephens area, and it’s great news for the tourism industry throughout the Hunter.”
NSW Labor Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said, “Labor’s plan to fully fund the duplication of Nelson Bay Road is a win for our community here in Port Stephens.
“Labor has listened to the community, and this significant investment in reducing congestion on Nelson Bay Road will mean that residents can spend more time doing the things that matter to them, instead of sitting in traffic.”
The two MPs said in a joint statement on Tuesday that 'while work has been done on Nelson Bay Road since 2002, there are still a number remaining single-lane road sections which create pinch points for the large volume of tourist traffic into and out of the Bay area.
'There is also a single-lane section of Nelson Bay Road which connects the Newcastle Airport to Newcastle, causing unnecessary delays for travellers and goods going in and out of Newcastle'.
