Port Stephens councillors approved the application at its June 9 meeting, subject to conditions including a lighting plan that is compliant with 'lighting for roads and public spaces' and that signage light be less than half of the maximum allowable (Australian Standard) between 10pm and 5am.
A spokesperson for McDonald's said that the organisation was excited to have received approval for the Medowie Road restaurant, and were working through the next steps towards commencing construction.
"The restaurant will provide new employment opportunities for locals and we look forward to working with the community, council and other business operators as part of a larger development," the spokesperson said.
The McDonald's restaurant will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with drive-through only between 11pm and 5am.
The development will have dining capacity for 90 people, a McCafe outlet, a playground, a drive-through facility, including two separate servery bays and two waiting bays, and accessible toilets.
It will be accessed via Peppertree Road and Muir Street with a two-way internal driveway.
A council report stated that other developments on the site, 795 Medowie Road, include an approved service station, vehicle workshop and food and drink premises. "A commercial building located to the north of the site was approved by council in August 2019, while a further application to the north includes a food and drink premises (restaurant) and two commercial tenancies and is currently under assessment."
