With a little more than a week left in the October-long fundraising challenge, and with another 330 kilometres to go until he hits his 1000km cycle target, Dr Smith from Raymond Terrace Family Practice has raised an incredible $35,000.
"People are very generous," Dr Smith said. "It's a real privilege to have so many people support me and the Children's Medical Research Institute, which is where the money from the challenge goes, when there's so many other great causes out there."
Dr Smith said he was inspired to do the cycle challenge after watching his two daughters and a friend's daughter battle cancer, plus the children with cancer he treats as a GP.
"Kids should be living life, not fighting for it," he said. "I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer."
In his first year of riding, Dr Smith raised $14,000, in the second $16,000.
So far this year, Dr Smith has raised over $35,000, making him one of NSW's top fund-raisers.
