Sergeant Clint Brown from Port Stephens Water Police said that officers would be out and about during the holiday period, ensuring people were doing the right thing on and in the water.
"For the first time Police are conducting a high visibility community engagement operation on Christmas Eve between 12pm and 2.30pm aboard police launch 'Intrepid', promoting the important water safety message," Sgt Brown said.
"We will be visiting all the beaches between Soldiers Point and Shoal Bay (including Jimmies Beach at Hawks Nest) with Santa onboard, delivering lollies to the children on beaches and in vessels while delivering the 'wear a lifejacket' message."
Sgt Brown said that Port Stephens was a popular spot for boating and water-based activities during holiday time and that the dangers in and around the Port's beaches and bays should never be underestimated.
"We want people to enjoy the summer season but to also be responsible by wearing a lifejacket; carrying the required safety equipment and ensuring its in good working order; monitoring the weather and sea conditions; don't drink and drive; log on and off with Marine Rescue Port Stephens; and be mindful of other waterway users."
He said that swimmers should always swim between the flags; read warning signs and act accordingly; and avoid dangerous situations.
