Recently, it's become an all too familiar occurrence for Port Stephens businesses during the pandemic, particularly in the retail and hospitality industries.
Staff shortages combined with restrictions, border openings and holiday crowds created a perfect storm for many local cafés, restaurants and stores over the Christmas break, who struggled to keep their doors open and maintain their usual level of service.
To support our small businesses, Port Stephens Council has teamed up with Business Port Stephens and Destination Port Stephens to create the 'Be Kind' campaign to raise awareness of the challenges businesses are facing from COVID-19 and encourage understanding and compassion from residents and visitors.
You may have already seen the posters on the wall of your favourite shop, or spied the cute little 'Be Kind' badges being worn by wait staff at the local café.
The 'Be Kind' message is spreading and gaining traction on social media thanks to support from local business groups and NSW Police.
Since the campaign's launch, it's become clear that the issue isn't limited to just retail and hospitality - it's far more widespread.
Whether it's lawn mowing, plumbing or rubbish collection, small business and service providers out there are doing their best to operate during these tough times and need a little kindness and understanding from all of us.
Port Stephens Council has a range of services to support small business during COVID-19, including a dedicated Small Business Support Hotline (02 4988 0255) to connect them with the advice and help they need.
Opening or growing a café, small bar or restaurant in Port Stephens is also simpler thanks to the Easy To Do Business program that provides step-by-step guidance and support across local, state and federal government requirements.
The impacts of COVID-19 are far reaching and it's going to take time for businesses to get back on their feet, but with extra support and a little bit of kindness, Port Stephens will continue to be envied as the perfect place to live, work and play - remember 'Be Kind'.
