Port Stephens Council's Youth Strategy has been created in close consultation with local young people and guides the delivery of youth-friendly services, infrastructure and programs across our region.
A sense of connection to our places and people is paramount, which is why the council has been working with locals to create more youth-friendly spaces like the newly revitalised Robinson Reserve.
Located within the gazetted Birubi Point Aboriginal Place, the reserve has been transformed into a community hub with a skate and scooter park, playground barbecue facilities and Aboriginal Place interpretative signage.
Work on stage two of the skate park will begin soon thanks to local feedback and funding by the Australian Government through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
Recent upgrades of the Mallabula Sports Complex makes it another great facility that not only encourages young people to be active and healthy, but fosters a feeling of inclusion and belonging by giving them a space to share their passions and hobbies.
When it comes to being heard, the council's Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) puts local young people front and center in the decision-making process.
Members advise on important issues for young people and how they can be addressed, help develop local projects, comment on council plans and strategies and represent Port Stephens Council at youth events.
YAP is open to residents 15 to 25 years and is always looking for new members. Just email youth@portstephens.nsw.gov.au.
One of the council's key roles is to make important links with the community sector, educational institutions, other levels of government and business to create the best possible outcomes for young people in our region.
The Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarships are offered annually thanks to the generosity of local businesses and provide financial aid to young people starting university or TAFE to help cover the cost of study-related expenses like books, laptops and accommodation.
Additionally, International Women's Day Scholarships are aimed at helping local women aged 16 years and over to achieve an important goal.
Applications are still open for 2022 and can be completed online by visiting portstephens.nsw.gov.au/international-womens-day-scholarship.
Youth are the Port's future and there's so much available to build them up in the region.
