The council has not webcast a meeting since 2012 when it pulled the plug for legal reasons.

But it became a hotbed topic in the countdown to the September 2017 election with widespread support to bring the service back among councillors.

“I campaigned on a platform of increased transparency and it’s my hope that this new webcast system will enable more members of the community to see what really happens at Council meetings and to get involved in the process,” Port Stephens mayor Ryan Palmer said.

“Soon after I was elected, I put forward a notice of motion with Cr Nell to reinstate the webcasting system. It’s something that our community really wants, so it’s great to see that we’ve been able to make it happen.

“I’m hoping that the new webcast will enable more people in our community to stay informed with issues that impact them – not just those few who are able to attend council meetings.”

The council decided to reinstate a livestream in December, which prompted rigorous debate. 

Council will meet Tuesday night (February 13). If there is no public access, the webcast will begin at 5.30pm, otherwise it will proceed shortly thereafter at http://www.portstephens.nsw.gov.au/council-webcasting/webcasting
