At the Little Athletics Port Hunter Zone Championships held in Salamander Bay before Christmas, 49 Raymond Terrace athletes took on members from 10 other centres from the zone.
In the under-7 age category, Olivia Mackaway from the Terrace centre won bronze for discus and the 50 metre sprint.
Record breakers included Nathan Morrissey in javelin (under-11), Keira McGregor in the 100m, 200m and long jump (under-12) and Belle Leonard in the 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles (under-17).
Other record breakers from the centre included Victoria Allen in the 100m hurdle and Duncan Akerman in shot put and discus. Thomas Jenkinson equalled the existing shot put record.
“There were many commendable performances with personal bests,” Deidre Hall, secretary for Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre, said of the zone championship.
A total of 45 Terrace athletes qualified to compete in events at the regional championships, which will be held at Mingara on Central Coast this weekend (February 24-25).
On the Australia Day long weekend, seven Terrace athletes competed at the NSW Country Championships in Wollongong.
They won a total of 12 medals – eight gold, three silver and one bronze.
Sienna Newton won gold in long jump, 100m and 200m (under-12), her sister Ebony finished with gold in the 100m, 200m and 200m hurdles and silver in the 80m hurdles (under-14). Jack Kenny (under-16) won gold in the javelin with a throw of 48.32, which was 16.16m ahead of second place.
Ellen Ditton (under-17) won silver in the 100m hurdles, Duncan Akerman (under-18) finished with a silver in shot put and Leonard, competing in under-20s, won gold in 100m hurdles and bronze in 400m hurdles.
A number of Terrace athletes competed at Athletics NSW Junior Championships in Sydney earlier this month. Three narrowly missed medals in their events. Leonard, 17, won gold in the under-20 100m hurdles.
The Terrace athletes have three more home meets, then the Little Athletics Regional Championships and Little Athletics State Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre on March 23-25.
