Target Country inside Salamander Bay Square is one of about 75 outlets across Australia that will permanently close or transform into Kmart or KHubs, smaller Kmart stores that stock products across kids, home and clothing.
Wesfarmers, which owns Target and Kmart, said the move was necessary to improve the commercial viability of the business.
"We want to thank our Salamander Bay team, the local community and all of our customers for shopping with us over the years," a Target spokesperson said.
"Our focus is on supporting our team through this time as we work through finding suitable redeployment within other Wesfarmers businesses as well as with other employers in town.
"Any permanent team members who we are unable to secure suitable redeployment will have access to all their entitlements."
Store closures and Kmart transformations began in 2020 and will continue through to "early-mid 2021".
The Salamander Bay store is slated for an "early-mid 2021" closure. The Target spokesperson confirmed to the Examiner that the closure would be complete in May.
Target said the decision to "transform the Target network" was necessary to "improve the commercial viability of the business and to support the thousands of people we employ".
"In order to do this successfully in the current retail environment... we know that we need to adapt our business - to make it smaller, more focused, less complex and more digitally enabled so we can better serve our customers both instore and online."
Customers can still shop Target products online and the retail outlet said it would provide a 'click and collect' option. Customers who shop online will be able to collect their products from other Target stores and "over time" Kmart outlets.
