The men's Hawks side proved far too strong for the Goannas, running out convincing winners 68-6. Jason Boney was the standout player at half back as he steered the Hawks around the park on the back of a dominant forward pack. Blockbusting centre Manu Matoka had a fine game scoring four tries.
The Hawks under-19 team were outgunned by Cessnock 54-0. Kayle Gordon never stopped trying in a beaten team. Congratulations to talented forward Aden Jennings who was selected in the Newcastle under-20 representative squad.
The Hawks' next home game is against Macquarie Scorpions on Sunday, May 22.
FINGAL Bay Rugby League Club men's team showed plenty of grit and determination to overcome the Wallsend-Maryland 28-24 on Saturday after the Tigers twice held the lead and looked sure to win.
The visitors were leading 18-16 with 10 minutes on the clock before the Bomboras stormed home with two converted tries in dying minutes to grab the competition points. Club stalwarts Bo Earl and Cameron Scully stood up with tries while young gun flying winger Lachlan Collins-Compton scored a try and was the players' player. Other try scorers were Zac Woods and Billy Clarke. Aiden McCarty kicked four goals.
The Fingal ladies league tag team continue to improve in the elite competition but went down to Cessnock 28-6 on Saturday. Grace Parfitt was the players' player.
Fingal are away to West Wallsend this weekend.
RAYMOND Terrace Rugby League Club had a good weekend with the Magpies men's team winning the prestigious Morten/Edmonds Shield with a 27-22 win over the Karuah Roos as well as the Ben Langdon Memorial Trophy.
For the Terrace, Jarrod Shedden was man of the match. For the Roos, it was Mitch Baker. Will Turpin had a fine game for the Magpies with a try and three goals while brothers Kurt and Dean Langdon had great games.
In C-grade, the Magpies proved too strong for Awabakal, 30-16. The Terrace side's fitness proved to be the difference. When the scores were locked at 10-10 at half time the Ferrari at the back, Mitch Simmington, scored two tries. Captain Luke Handsaker was the players' player. Best forward went to hardworking prop Steve Forest.
The Magpies ladies league tag team went down to Awabakal 22-0.
The C-grade Terrace men are away this weekend at Belmont to play Lakes. The Magpies ladies are away to Cardiff and the Ravens ladies in Stroud on Saturday to face Clarence Town.
NELSON Bay Croquet Club has a new state title holder in its ranks in Peter Gordon.
Gordon represented Nelson Bay in the NSW Association Croquet Bronze Singles Championship which was played at Killara Croquet Club between Monday, May 2 and Wednesday, May 4.
The championship is for AC players with handicaps 14-20 and is played as 18 point games - level play but with a time limit.
There were nine entries including Gordon. The first round was played in two blocks of round-robin games. Gordon was undefeated, winning four games with +45 net hoops in the Red Block of five players.
In the semi-final Gordon beat Fidye Westgarth (Mosman) 15-4 and then, in the final, beat Warwick Nassif (Warrawee) 16-6.
Gordon's win was the first State Association Croquet title won by anyone from Nelson Bay.
NELSON Bay Golf Club's master pennant team hosted the Cypress Lakes masters team at Nelson Bay Golf Club on Sunday, May 8.
The matches were deadlocked at a 4-4 draw. The winners for the Bay were Peter Sutton, Michael Sproule, Tony Short, and the in form Rod Barker.
In a Titanic battle across all the matches, three of the games were decided on the 18th and one on the 17th. The Nelson Bay team now move on to face Merewether Golf Club's masters team on Sunday, May 15. Hit off is at 10.52am.
Nelson Bay Golf Club will host its popular Water Wonderland Golf Tournament on June 11.
All men who have a G.A. handicap of 36 or better are invited to play two challenging rounds of Stableford for significant prizes. Entries are being taken now. The cost to enter is $45 for members and $90 visitors.
